Satyam rocks AP Assembly, Oppn MLAs suspended
10 February, 2009 |
Hyderabad, Feb 11: A day after the ruckus in the UP Assembly, on Wednesday it was the turn of the Andhra Assembly where the Opposition created a furore over the alleged links between Satyam’s disgraced chief Ramalinga Raju and the family of Chief Minister YSR Reddy leading to the suspension of all Opposition MLAs for a day.
The commotion started when the Opposition members tried to seek a clarification on Satyam scandal. The Opposition wanted the government to come clear on the alleged links between Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy and Satyam’s disgraced founder Ramalingam Raju.
Opposition also claimed that Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s son Jagmohan’s newspaper “Sakshi” was funded by Ramalinga Raju, pointed to the deep links between the two and that’s why a probe is needed. Besides, the Opposition has also claimed that Jagmohan’s money may also be invested in Raju’s son’s company Maytas.
Moreover, the Opposition accused that the articles published in the paper are derogatory towards the opposition.
However, when the Speaker rejected the demands, the Opposition MLAs started raising slogans resulting in the suspension of all TDP, TRS, CPI and CPM members from the House for the day. But the agitating MLAs had refused to go out of the House forcing the Speaker to send marshals to take them manually out of the Assembly. Soon a clash erupted between the marshals and Opposition MLAs.
Some media personnel present there had to bear the brunt in an attempt to mock at the free press.
Meanwhile talking to Zee News, Hareeshwar Reddy of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) said, “The Chief Minister is not answering any queries of the Opposition. Opposition members were thrown out of the House. This has never happened in the history of Andhra Pradesh,”
Reddy further accused the Speaker of the House of acting in biased manner. “The Speaker of the House is acting at the behest of the ruling party. His job was to inform the ruling party about Opposition’s queries. But he instead suspended opposition MLAs who were thrown out of the House.”
Meanwhile, Bandaru Dattatreya of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also condemned the ruckus in the Assembly.
“The Opposition is putting pressure on the govt on the Satyam issue. Congress is ruling both at the state as well as at Centre. However, the Centre is not saying anything on the issue. But this sort of incident should not happen inside the House,” Dattatreya said.
However, he claimed that BJP MLAs are not involved in the gory incident where the he added.
The Budget session of the Assembly is slated to end tomorrow and over the course of the session, the Satyam scandal has figured prominently in the proceedings. Sources are saying that the session has been suspended for sometime. |
